Travel Items

Television host and travel author Rick Steves' favorite mantra is "Pack Light! Pack Light! Pack Light!" I have a tendency to pack like a doomsday prepper, filling my bag with every item I think I might need. (It's a problem I am slowly working on!) But the truth is, by packing light you can save time, money, and hassle. It’ll be easier to pack and unpack, you can avoid check-in luggage fees on flights (increasingly on long-distance ones) and it will simply increase your overall mobility and ease of travel.

The travel items listed here are not intended serve as a packing list; this is simply a place to document items that might be helpful for some travelers. Certain packable items are often unnecessary for every trip because their utility depends on the destination, length, and type of trip.

Before you pack:

  1. Consider your destination: A beach trip requires different items than a ski trip.

  2. Evaluate the trip length: A short weekend trip requires less than a longer vacation.

  3. Check your accommodation: See if your hotel or rental provides amenities like hair dryers or irons.

  4. Pack smart and light: Focus on versatile, essential items that can be used for multiple purposes.

Here are some items to help you travel smoother and smarter.
