Etymology

The Hebrew word adam (אדם), meaning "man" or "humankind," is etymologically linked to the Hebrew word adama (אדמה), which means "ground" or "earth". The name Adam thus signifies the first human's origin, as God formed him from the dust of the earth. This foundational connection between humanity and the soil is central to the meaning of Adam, reflecting his earthly nature and eventual return to the ground.
