Overview
Joseph's Tomb is a heavily contested religious site in Nablus (biblical Shechem), in the West Bank. It is venerated by Jews as the burial place of the biblical patriarch Joseph and is also sacred to Samaritans, Christians, and Muslims. The structure has been a frequent flashpoint for regional conflict.
The book of Genesis says that before Joseph died, he made his brothers promise to carry his bones from Egypt to Canaan. He was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt. Later, in Exodus, Moses kept this promise by taking Joseph’s bones when the Israelites left Egypt. Finally, in the book of Joshua, it says that Joseph’s bones were buried in Shechem. The site in Shechem (modern-day Nablus) is believed to be the place where the bones were buried.
