Overview
Chorazin (Chorazim, Korazin or Korazim) is often remembered from Scripture as the recipient of Jesus’ condemnation (“Woe to you, Chorazim!”) because their people did not accept his teachings and repent (Matthew 11:20-24; Luke 10:13-14). Chorazim is about 2 miles due north of the Mount of Beatitudes. Jewish writings say its wheat was of exceptional quality and was used in the Temple.
Today, visitors to Chorazin can explore the ruins of the ancient village, which include the remains of a synagogue, a residential area, and a ritual bath. The synagogue is the most impressive site in Korazim, featuring intricate stone carvings and a large prayer hall. The village also offers stunning views of the Sea of Galilee and the surrounding landscape.

Biblical, Historical, & Archaeological Background Information
Chorazin (Chorazim, Korazin or Korazim) is believed to have been inhabited from the 1st century BC until the 8th century AD.
Architecture
The remains of an elaborate synagogue are a striking feature of the ruins of Chorazin. It was rebuilt in the 3rd or 4th centuries, when the town was thriving. Constructed of local black basalt stone, the synagogue stood on an elevated area in the center of the town. A broad staircase led to its façade, which faced south towards Jerusalem. The synagogue had one large hall, with stone benches around the walls for the community to sit during services. The absence of an upper gallery for women suggests the sexes were not segregated at the time it was built.

Spiritual Lessons and Application
Chorazin is a testament to Christ’s judgment on a people who rejected His teachings, miracles, healing, and salvation. Chorazin stands as a warning to us today not to do the same. Are we walking in close obedience, or living in casual obedience to Christ, or even disobedience?
Etymology
Korazim – source of name may be the root “Karoz” – which means in Hebrew “announcer”.
